Stephen Grant TD Pre-owned Side by Side Damascus Shotgun - 12 gauge Walnut
Stephen Grant TD Pre-owned Side by Side Damascus Shotgun - 12 gauge Walnut
A chance to own part of English gun making history. This damascus barrelled side by side shotgun with side lever opening was originally part of pair made by Stephen Grant Gunmakers in London circa 1880. It was reproofed sometime between 1925 and 1954, again in London for nitro, so modern cartridges can be used in it. Mechanically, this gun is in excellent condition for its age, with the barrels being free of corrosion and pitting. The lock up is excellent as well. Cosmetically, the gun could benefit from a gentle restoration. The finish on the wood shows the grain as is, but a refinish would really bring the gun back to life. The barrels are damascus steel but have been blacked rather than browned and would benefit from a complete refinish. This historic piece of English gun making is excellent value for money and certain to be a conversation starter whenever it is used.
The barrels have been clock gauged as of September 2024 and measure at .730 on the left hand barrel and .719 on the right hand barrel.

Stephen Grant was an Irish gunmaker active in the UK from 1843, originally working for Charles Lancaster until 1847, when he moved to Boss & Co. after Lancaster's death. Both Lancaster and Boss had a well deserved reputation for high quality firearms, showing that Grant was amongst the first rate of gunmakers at the time. In 1867, Grant left Boss to form his own business, operating from 67A James Street. Grant's own business started well, with comissions and gifts to royalty and aristocracy. Guns made before 1889 have 'Stephen Grant' on the barrels, whilst anything after 1889 state 'Stephen Grant and Sons'. Grant's shotguns are in high demand with collectors in the UK due to their excellent quality and handling, plus their distinctive shape with the side lever opening on the right, a feature that lasted long into the era of hammerless guns.
