Lokaway

The idea for the Lokaway design began after a sales trip, on a flight from Sydney to Melbourne in 2002. CEO and Founder Brett Dunstan, which has been involved in the gun safe business in various iterations since 1989. With a background in engineering and an apprenticeship in fitting and turning and sheetmetal fabrication, Brett was always thinking and tinkering – and it was on this flight his thoughts turned to a new kind of locking system for safes. Jotting down some rough sketches on a napkin, Brett wondered if he was on to something big. Within 24 hours after building a sample that worked the way he thought it would, he was at the patent attorney’s office, and Lokaway was born.

Twenty years later, and while the napkin has unfortunately been lost to time, the idea has not. The innovative locking system Brett came up with on that day in October 2002 has turned into a thriving business, a key innovation in anti-pry technology that is entirely unique and in demand worldwide.

The deceptively simple Lokaway Swing’n’Slide locking system works like this: as well as your usual top-quality safe features – hardened anti-drill plates and high-security locks – Lokaway Swing’n’Slide turns the safe door into an extra layer of security. The safe door doesn’t simply shut and lock – the entire door slides into the frame of the safe, completely concealing the edge of the door and securing itself into a specially designed slot. Simple, yet incredibly effective.

Since its inception in 2002, Lokaway has gone from strength to strength, holding a unique position in the global safe market with this Australian-owned and designed technology. A continued effort towards research and development helped Lokaway to secure many new patents in its early years. 2016 saw the product undergo some major enhancements, which gave Lokaway a huge boost in its IP, which led to further patents being granted.

Today, while Lokaway’s research continues in our head office, based in Pakenham, Victoria, Brett quickly realised that combining the world’s best in manufacturing and materials was a surefire way to ensure Lokaway’s success.

Now patented in over 30 countries, Lokaway’s state-of-the-art locking system has caught the attention of numerous big name global manufacturing and distribution networks.

Lokaway proves there are still innovations to be made, even in something as tried and tested as the door on a safe. Brett and the team have worked tirelessly to bring together a global team of experts to turn this Australian-owned and designed technology into a reality.
